Very difficult hike, the trail is pretty straight up and slippery but once you get to the mountains on top, there’s a lot of open muscle and it’s beautiful.

I started at the Rainforest Trailhead. The trail was a bit wet from recent snow. The scenery was beautiful even without the sun. Somehow I ended up on the Outer Loop Trail. Part of the trail had been rerouted thanks to a dammed up section. I reached the Outer Loop Trailhead and walked back to the car from there.

Dan Moller to Troy to Eaglecrest. Fun route with good snow. Still plenty of snow machines running. We got on a skin track just a bit north of Dan Moller Cabin.

Beautiful, frosty afternoon! The boardwalk section of the Pioneer Street access was extremely slippery (never above freezing today unless hit by sun), as were streets and sidewalks coming down from the Blueberry Hill access, but gravel sections of this hike were consistently excellent. Kudos and thanks to those who are working (many of them volunteering) to improve the Ditch trail!

Although this trail is very difficult, with most of the elevation gain taking place in the mile and a half from where I left Montana Creek to where I turned around—and the steepest section is also the rootiest and most slippery—it is richly rewarding for its extraordinary views. Once above tree line, the subalpine meadows and alpine tundra are spectacular in and of themselves, with occasional small tarns to frame views of the airport area, Douglas Island, Eagle Peak on Admiralty Island, Lynn Canal and the Chilkat Range, and the northwest sides of Mounts McGinnis and Stroller White. The ridge trail ascends steeply at times from where I turned around but offers increasing views of distant peaks (including Mount Fairweather), local peaks like Split Thumb, and glaciers (including Herbert). This trail is hard to beat for scenery!

Not a real trail. Definitely easy to get turned around and start down the wrong path since there are lots of different routes people have taken. Muddy, steep, brushy, and had to climb over several fallen trees.

One of my favorite day hikes in the area because of the stunning variety of scenery. You pass the first waterfall only minutes into the hike and climb alongside a crashing cascade before arriving in a small valley dominated by an enormous falls off the side of Bear Mountain. All before a rainforest stroll that descends to gorgeous Beaver Lake.

Awesome hike, great skin track and amazing views. Ski down was short but worth while, found some great snow in the trees. Avalanche danger was very low and not anything to worry about.

Great route. The only thing I would change from this route is instead of leaving northeast from the cabin, I would double back down the John Muir trail before heading northeast, avoiding the loopdiloop shown at the beginning of my track.

The trail begins alongside an estuary. Beware the squishy unappetizing mud/sludge. As you duck into the trees you start to climb a relatively maintained set of stairs. Continuing on the trail becomes less maintained and overgrown with roots. On your left about halfway in you will stumble upon a hidden lake with a sandy bottom. Moving on you’ll come to a fork in the road. Take the left. The right gets you where you want to go but requires more walking through soft mushy muskeg. The trail opens up to a wide expanse of white sand beach. Some might say it appears tropical and “unlike anything else in southeast alaska”.

Pick up the trail at the base of Eaglecrest’s Black Bear chairlift. Look for flagging around the creek. Super muddy for a while but so worth it when you break into the alpine meadows! 360 views and a swimmable infinity pool lake at the top with views of downtown. Very cool. No one hikes this one.

Easy, well graveled path from the ski area to the junction with with Treadwell Ditch. There are a number of side paths on boardwalks across the muskeg, but these are poorly maintained.

Nice hike from town. Steep start up to Lower Dewey Lake, then flattens out before dropping steeply down loose rocks to the picnic area on the beach. On a calm day the picnic area is wonderful. On windy days you may not be there long. Seals play in the water next to the beach. Great view down the sound. About 3 miles each way and 1100' total vertical gain.
