Overview

Disconnect on the archipelago of Isle Royale National Park and plug into the bursting moose population and wild forests. Keep your eyes peeled for the lonely wolf or two ranging this little known national park and find out why the initiated keep returning year after year.

Getting Started

Since Isle Royale takes some getting to, plan to hang around for a few days. Get here by plane or by boat from Minnesota or Michigan. If you leave from the shores of Minnesota, you can take advantage of visiting Grand Portage National Monument before or after the National Park, a worthy side trip.

When you've finally arrived at Isle Royale, hit the trail and visit Rock Harbor via Tobin Harbor Trail and Lane Cove Trail, the Stoll Trail, or Threemile via Tobin Harbor Trail and Rock Harbor Trail. Check out other great hikes along the 165 miles of trail at Isle Royale in our popular hikes section, below. Staying the night? Check out your four walled options, or head for the woods.

When to Go

The park closes during the winter, so visit from mid-April to October. Just beware flies and mosquitoes early in the season.

Permits

Permits and reservations can be found, here.

Dog Info

Sorry dog lovers, but pets are not allowed on the island in order to protect wildlife (except service dogs, but arrange your permit in advance).

Pretty difficult for the uninitiated. However, very satisfying to get to S. Lake Desor on day 1. Higher probability of seeing moose, and very good berry hunting in August. Highly recommend this route day one for a cross island trek.
