Best Hiking Trails in High Point State Park

Overview

High Point State Park is a 16,091 acre state park in Sussex County, New Jersey. At the highest point in NJ a monument reaches 1803 feet above sea level. High Point has trails for hiking and cross-country skiing and areas for camping and fishing. The Appalachian Trail runs through the park.

Getting Started

There are over 50 miles of trails in the park. Activities include hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, dogsledding and snowmobiling. The trails vary in length from 0.5 to 18 miles.

When to Go

An entrance fee is charged on weekdays and weekends from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day with a discount on weekdays. Entrance fees are not charged after 4 PM.

Permits

Parking for the AT requires a permit. Permits are required for picnicking, camping and cross country skiing. Swimming is allowed at Lake Marcia but only while there is a lifeguard on duty. Boating is permitted at Sawmill Lake and Steenykill Lake.
