Overview

Tucked away in the southeastern corner of Canyonlands National Park, Utah, the Needles District is a backpacker’s paradise. Discover a landscape dominated by signature towering Cedar Mesa sandstone spires poking up from the desert floor and over 60 miles of trails that create the colorful canvas painted with red-and-white striped mesas, buttes, and needles.

Located along the access road coming into the Needles District, take a step back in time to explore one of Utah’s Historic Monuments, Newspaper Rock, a massive rock formation covered with pictographs and petroglyphs from various prehistoric cultures which have been attributed to peoples from the Archaic, Anasazi, Fremont, Navajo, Anglo, and Pueblo cultures some 2,000 years ago. Cozy up at Squaw Flat Campground, an ideal base camp to popular day hikes like Chesler Park, Druid Arch and Joint Trail. About 3 miles from the Elephant Canyon trailhead, find your way to overlook or loop around Chesler Park, one of only a few grassy areas in the region surrounded by hundreds of delicate sandstone spires. The 11-mile round trip hike drops you into what feels like some of the Southwest’s famous slot canyons, but without the crowds. This section of the hike is the famous “Joint Trail” and part of what makes this one of America’s best desert day hikes.

Those used to crowded National Park roads and lines will find the Needles District refreshingly quiet—the nearest town, Monticello is a 60-minute drive, and Moab is a 90-minute drive. Prepare for desert days filled with world class four-wheel driving, backpacking, biking, camping, horseback riding, scenic drives, and stargazing when you visit.

Getting Started

Pack and plan accordingly, as there is only one paved road, UT 211, that leads in and out of the Needles area. Squaw Flat Campground hosts a total of 29 sites, 26 individual and 3 group camps, some of which can be reserved in the prime seasons for exploration, spring and fall. Squaw Flat campground typically fills up every day from late March through June and again from early September to mid-October.

There’s plenty of space for lengthy hikes and multi-day backpacking trips from the Needles. The Chesler Park Loop should be on the top of your bucket list to view panoramic views of the Needles formations and for a dose of history, check out Cave Spring, an accessible loop that leads to a historic cowboy camp and prehistoric rock paintings. Set aside a day to reach the Confluence Overlook, a hike that ends at a cliff overlooking the junction of the Green and Colorado rivers, or if you’re in a pinch, check out Roadside Run for a glimpse of an ancestral Puebloan-era structure.

Many trails are marked with cairns (rock piles) and have signs at the intersections, however, some of the remote trails do not receive regular maintenance and may not be marked, requiring some route finding skills. Some routes and trails require climbing up or down ladders out of a dry wash, walking along precipitous canyon ledges, and scrambling through cracks.

When to Go

Not all deserts mean constant heat. Canyonlands is the high desert, so be prepared for potential swings in temperature of 40 degrees in a day and bring plenty of layers. Spring and Fall are the peak seasons to visit, with highs from 60 to 80 degrees fahrenheit and lows from 30 to 50. Summer can be sweltering and reach well beyond 100 degrees along with the potential of flash floods. Remember to check the forecast before you go, as rainfall in other areas can cause flash floods in the park. Winter can be a beautiful but challenging time to visit, and if you’re up for the challenge, developed campgrounds and roads are open year-round. While snowfall is rare, a rogue dusting could mean impassable trails, come prepared for a winter wonderland by day and temperatures below zero at night.

Permits

Elephant Hill, Lavender Canyon, and Peekaboo (Horse Canyon) roads all require day-use permits for four-wheel-drive, motorcycle, and bicycle travel. You can get a day-use permit online up to 24 hours before your trip, find full permit requirements here (https://www.nps.gov/cany/planyourvisit/dayusepermits.htm). All overnight trips into the backcountry require an overnight permit, and trips on the river require their own permit.

Dog Info

Dogs are allowed on leash at Squaw Flat Campground, on paved scenic drives, in parking lots, and on the Potash/Shafer Canyon road. Dogs are not allowed on leash at overlooks, on hiking trails, in the backcountry or on backcountry roads (even in your vehicle) or in the rivers.

Big Spring Canyon to Wooden Shoe Canyon (6/1/24, 8:06:06AM)
The trail has recently been renamed from Squaw to Wooden Shoe by NPS. Absolutely gorgeous hike in either direction but we walked counterclockwise. About half the trail had us on sandstone and included some scrambling that I would find challenging with a backpack but there were a lot of hikers with big packs doing just fine. Rewarded with stunning views climbing over the ridge mid-way. Very exposed most of the way but some relief at the lowland areas near the start and finish.

    Druid arch and joint trail
Starting at joint trail head hike through really cool rock features and slots. Past the camp sites and down to join the Druid arch trail. 4-5 hours and about 9.5 miles out and back. Good shoes for sticky sand stone. Some scrambling needed. There are pockets of water that you could filter just before you reach Druid arch.

Good hiking in canyonlands if you have already hiked the slick Rick sections of peekaboo, elephant, chesler, etc. Do this one on your second trip.

Eyeball explosion moments around every bend. Difficult terrain that involves climbing ladders and scrambling through cracks, but worth it.

It was truly beautiful getting to see all the canyons. The hike had lots of long drops and long stretches of hard rocky stair cases but it was worth it to see the view from the top

Great hike. Lots of bouldering. Super craggy. There’s a ladder in the first hour to clear a ten foot ledge. Be in shape. I passed one couple on the way to it and overheard a bearded ginger telling his lady friend he was going to die. She replied ‘that’s the second time you said that’. That was at the halfway mark. On the second mesa. From there you drop down into a valley that has some flat spots. About two miles later you arrive at a 4x4 parking area. Ascend from there another half file and you’re at the overlook. The Green/Colorado river confluence. I bounced shortly there afterwards because there was a selfie extravaganza going on from all the Jeep folks. Also, watch for the cairns. Go so, lots of ankle biters and opps to jack yourself if you’re not paying attention. One very mild ankle roll. A scrape on left knee. Flawless considering. Went through 60oz of water. It was perfect.

62 yo H and W. Trail well marked with cairns. First canyon will kill your time per hour but you will make it up later. 3 hours to river. 30 minute lunch. Took lots of pictures on the way back.

    Druid arch
Great hike. I did it early in the morning so I had shade the whole way there. The trail basically follows the wash all the way to a box canyon. As the canyon narrows you have to take the bypass trail to the left because of choke stones and a pool with a pore over. Some scrambling at the end to reach the base of the arch. But it’s easily done. Beautiful canyon.

This 11 mile loop has everything; narrow canyons, grasslands, towering needles of rock, and some rock scrambling. We had a blast. Did it with our 18 month old in her back carrier with no issues.

The out and back hike on the peek a boo trail is not to be missed. Added on Lost Canyon at the end which was not as good as we had hoped.

Fun trail. Mid-April on a Friday, the weather was perfect (mid-50s) and just a couple other groups on the trail. The sandstone sections were my favorite. Not a lot of vertical on this trail, mostly pretty level. The trails are pretty well marked with cairns, but the signs aren't terribly clear, so I backtracked a couple of times when I realized that I was on the wrong trail. I ran this trail, and I admit that I was a bit slower than I expected. It was hard to keep a good pace in the dry creekbed on the south section of the Big Spring trail (southwest section of this loop.) Also I frequently had to stop to scan for the next cairn. I had a good time, though. I recommend it.

Did this hike on a Saturday in late September. Got to the trailhead around 7:30 am and we were one of the first few cars there. The trail eventually got a little busier, but it never felt crowded by any means. Took about 5.5 hours to do the 11+ mile loop (including a 30 minute stop), but it never seemed overly difficult. The trail is well marked overall. A few tricky spots along the way, but those spots are a lot of fun to navigate. The landscape is just stunning! Definitely one of the highlights of our nearly week-long trip to Moab. I'd highly recommend putting this hike on your list.
