Overview

There's something to be said for claiming the title as the world's first national park, and it's no wonder why Yellowstone holds that honor. With its enormous diversity of plants and animals, a caldera of roiling caldron-like mud-pots and hot springs of luminous greens, blues, yellows and oranges, Yellowstone is nothing short of spectacular. Boasting nearly 60% of the world's geysers, it's also a bit scary given the potential hazards to human life silently bubbling away below the state of Wyoming in the form of a supervolcano that could change the face of the country. But don't worry, [it's extremely well monitored] (https://news.nationalgeographic.com/2017/10/yellowstone-supervolcano-erupt-faster-thought-science/). So despite cause for future alarm, don't pass up a visit to one of America's most beloved, and geologically active, national parks!

Getting Started

Because Yellowstone National Park is so massive, there are various points of entrance with five roads leading into the park. Eight developed areas all center around the most impressive of the natural features, of which there are many. Each one is unique and worth a visit! Just make sure to plan your visit well, so you don't miss all it has to offer. Check out the current conditions page before you go for all the latest information.

Mammoth Hot Springs

From the North Entrance, you'll arrive at the Mammoth Hot Springs area and visitor center first. This is also home to Park Headquarters. Mammoth Hot Springs can't be missed, as it's so unique to the area, with dissolved limestone flowing through terraces and creating the chalky white mineral deposits that form the pools. Explore the Upper and Lower Terrace Boardwalks for great views. Just note that the road's closed from November to April, depending on winter conditions.

Tower-Roosevelt

The Tower-Roosevelt area just to the east of Mammoth Hot Springs is known for Tower Falls, where Tower Creek plunges 132 feet before making its way to the Yellowstone River. Columnar basalt rocks in the shape of hexagonal pillars jut above the roadway nearby, evidence of lava flows over a million years old. Make sure to keep your eyes peeled for bears and big horn sheep, as well as a stop at Petrified Tree.

Canyon Village

Canyon Village is home to the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, measuring 20 miles long from Upper Falls to the Tower Falls area, and was formed by erosion via the Yellowstone River. Take a hike along Brink of the Lower Falls Trail, while taking in views of Lower Falls via Lookout Point, Red Rock Point, Artist Point or along the South Rim Trail.

If you're heading south, don't miss watching for wildlife in Hayden Valley. Spot grizzly bears in the spring and early summer, and newborn bison and elk calves. In the fall, look for herds of bison during their fall rut. Look out for coyotes and many different bird species as well. Just remember not to approach wild animals, and keep 100 yards between you and bears or wolves!

When snow levels permit, hike up the 10,243 foot Mount Washburn trail. Take a rest at the top while checking out the interpretive exhibits inside the fire lookout while enjoying the view. If you're visiting in July, you'll get the added bonus of wildflowers.

Before you leave, visit the Canyon Visitor Education Center in the Canyon Village and learn more about the supervolcano and surrounding area.

Norris

The Norris area is well known for the Norris Geyser Basin. It's unique because it's the most dynamic of the thermal areas in Yellowstone, as well as the hottest and oldest, with temperatures measuring a whopping 459 degrees Fahrenheit just 1,087 feet below the surface. Geologic evidence shows that this area has had thermal features for at least 115,000 years.

While here, make sure to explore both the Porcelain Basin area as well as the Back Basin area, and spend time on this great walk to Steamboat Geyser and Yellow Mud Pot among many others. Visit the Norris Geyser Basin Museum along the trail, and the Museum of the National Park Ranger near the Norris campground just to the north. For further exploration, here's a complete list of places to visit.

Madison

Madison is near the West Entrance of the park. On your way to or from Norris, stop at Artists Paintpots and the Terrace Springs boardwalk just northeast of the Madison junction. Just south of the junction, take a driving tour of Firehole Canyon, through 800-foot thick lava flows. On a hot day, take a dip near the 40-foot Firehole Falls waterfall.

Heading south from Madison towards Old Faithful, don't miss Grand Prismatic Spring, and take a longer hike up and around for great views of Yellowstone's most photographed thermal feature.

Fishing Bridge, Lake Village and Bridge Bay

The three villages on the northwest corner of Yellowstone Lake offer campgrounds, lodging, stores, a visitor center, medical clinic, boating access and more. If you're coming from Canyon Village and Hayden Valley, stop by Sulphur Caldron on your way south, Yellowstone's most acidic hot spring, as well as Mud Volcano. The backcountry in Pelican Valley is another great place to see wildlife, and offers longer forays into the wild. If time permits, visit the natural rock bridge just south of Bridge Bay Campground.

Yellowstone Lake itself sits at about 7,000 feet in elevation, making it the largest high elevation lake in North America, and has the largest population of cutthroat trout, as well as incredible thermal activity and importance. The ground below the surface of the lake is much like the surrounding area, with rock spires, underwater geysers, hot springs and fumaroles. The northern part of the lake was shaped by lava flows and other geologic activity, while the southern part (which lies outside of the caldera), was shaped by glacial and other processes.

We're hoping that someday that national park service will come up with submarine tours to explore this incredible murky underworld, but we won't hold our breath.

More Info

From here, continue your journey south to reach Grand Teton National Park.

Check out this map of the park, points of interest, campgrounds and amenities.

Due to Yellowstone's massive popularity, here's a great list of available campgrounds and amenities within the park. Make sure to reserve your spot well in advance, or try your luck with one of the first-come, first-served sites.

When to Go

Though summer is a beautiful time to visit Yellowstone, it can also be extremely packed. Plan your visit for before 9am or after 3pm during the summer months to avoid crowds. Interested in fall colors, raptors, bears, bison and more? Check out Yellowstone's seasonal highlights and find something for everyone, all year long. Visiting in the winter? Check out the park's winter safety recommendations.

Permits

Daily, weekly and annual passes are sold on-site or online, and are required to enter Yellowstone National Park. On a budget? Visit the park during one of the fee-free days.

With more than 300 backcountry campsites, a trip further afield is well worth the effort. Just make sure to pick up your backcountry hiking permit. Fishing or boating permits can be found here.

Dog Info

Like most national parks, dogs are permitted on a leash no longer than six feet, and only in developed areas. That includes areas within 100 feet of roads, parking areas and campgrounds. Note that pets are not permitted in any of the thermal areas. Get more details on bringing your dog to Yellowstone, here.

    WE6 via Specimen Creek
Backpacking group of 3 – July 25-29, 2024. Specimen Creek Tr > Sportsman Lake Tr > Crescent/High Lake Tr >High Lake (1 night) > Shooting Star Mtn > Crescent Lake > Specimen Creek Tr > Shelf Lake (2 nights) > Sky Rim Tr to Bighorn Pk - King Butte - Sheep Mtn > Specimen Creek Tr > Crescent Lake Tr > Crescent Lake (1 night) > Specimen Creek Tr out. Beautiful part of Yellowstone that has it all and is “off the beaten path.” Stretches of dense forest with verdant wildflower blooms and several high grass meadows with creeks winding through them. Very picturesque lakes with clean camps. Panoramic, long ranging views off the Sky Rim Trail and plenty of crags on the buttes to climb. Frequent orange painted trail markers along the way, especially in the areas where the trails are harder to discern, along with a few rock cairns on Sky Rim. Traded the snow for late afternoon thunderstorms that passed through at opportune times (after camp setup and at the end of day hikes). Pleasant day time temps and not too cold at night with a little smoke hazing on Sky Rim from the Clearwater Fire burning NE of Yellowstone.. Not very muddy on any of the trails and only the one knee deep water crossing that others have mentioned near the Sportsman/Specimen trails junction ( nice & cold, slower moving water). The upper half of the Specimen Creek Trail going to Sky Rim and/or Shelf Lake will definitely make you work, but the rest of the trails ares moderate with a 45-50 lb pack. Ran across a few fellow backpackers and day hikers on day 1 and then day 5. Our group was the only one camped at each of the 3 lakes which was totally unexpected for July. Despite the mosquitos being out in force, it was nice to swim in the lakes which were much warmer than expected. We met a large, white mountain goat guarding the Shooting Star summit, before running in to a band of 20-30 goats on the Sky Rim Trail later in the trip. Surprised that we didn’t see any bears, black or grizzly, given the evidence that they were around and that this area is on the border of the Gallatin Bear Management area. We used bear canisters for food storage and hung trash/toiletries in dry bags on the bear poles. Was nice to have a fire permit for Crescent Lake, days before the fire restrictions took effect, and thanks to USFS for the cut and stacked firewood cache! First time backpacking in YNP for the other 2 party members and a great time for all of us. Logged 44.2 backpacking miles and 8713 vert ft for the trip with Gaia

Started around 9am. Finished in 3 hours not including stops to look around. Half shade half sun. Was only about 50s-60°s F. Was windy at the top, but beautiful views. Only saw deer. People of all ages, shapes, and sizes were also on this trail (toddlers, pregnant women, old folk, etc). Was not too bad for an asthmatic.

    Mt. Washburn-Chittenden Dr.
My. Washburn is a nice hike regardless of which trail you choose. The Chittenden Rd. trail follows the dirt road to the lookout tower on top of Mt. Washburn. It is an exposed trail with fantastic views the whole way. Typically a windy hike. Be sure to take a jacket and water.

    Cascade creek trail partial
There’s parking for about 6-8 cars at the TH on Canyon-Norris Road just a bit west of the Canyon Junction. I liked this out and back because it has variety. You start in the meadow, you’re in dappled woods, you have bridges and a tiny creek to cross. It’s easy and fun. You can add to your hike when you end at Cascade Lake trail. Bugs a little bothersome, you are following a creek.

    Yellowstone Picnic Trail
The TH is near the vault toilet. There’s a bit of a climb up to the ridge but after that it’s fairly flat. You’re on the opposite side of the canyon. Very cool with a mule deer die and fawn and marmots. You hike this for the views. Bugs were minimal. Parking lot isn’t too big, so go early. In 2023, the bridge was being repaired. The entrance is right after the construction.

    Canyon—South Rim Hike
A beautiful hike following the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone from the overlook at the first parking lot to Artist Point. I hiked back along the road to the first parking lot. There’s a shoulder on the road. You might find elk along the road if you walk. There was a great feature here on Uncle Tom’s Cabin trail where you could walk down 200 steps to close to the bottom of the upper falls but it’s gone. That’s very disappointing.

Purple Mountain was a fun hike through a wooded area. It’s a narrow trail bordered by trees or cliffs. Deep snow at higher elevations made the top unreachable, but would hike again.

    N. Yellowstone Entrance -> Mammoth Hot Springs-> Old. Gardiner Rd.
A fantastic adventure. I’ve been wanting to ride this loop for a over a year. Cons: screw that road climb on the timberjack mid fats.... hated every minute of it! And wished I had brought my cross bike instead... that is until I crossed over onto Old Gardiner Road! Seriously, y’all, could have been more fun than skiing. The conditions were prime winter hiking- hard packed dirt road, dry as salt, with a silt of sparkling snow dust across the wide and windy road. I had earned my descend, and sent it downhill like a mof****** bobsled, zooming they the twilight day-moon night sky. No slipping, just berserkIng amongst the wild Yellowstone Nat. Park.

The Park service exaggerates calling this trail 11 miles. It was delightful all the way down to the bottom of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River. The trail is less maintained than in Arizona‘s famous Grand Canyon but it’s also less overused and over developed. It is a very pleasurable little-seen corner of the park.

Pretty short hike for its views, from the top you can see Mammoth Terraces as well as the town of Mammoth. Somewhat windy at peak, there is also a chipmunk which practically climbs on you while waiting for you to toss it food. Don’t feed it, but it still is entertaining to watch.

Fan Creek to Specimen Creek via High Lake and Crescent Lake
Please note, this is a 30 mile loop, not 25, as I didn’t start trip recording until first camp. I started hiking at the Fawn Pass trailhead then continued up Fan Creek. The first camp is now located at the end of a 3/4 mile spur off main trail. Then you are supposed to return to main trail on the spur and continue up— one could see the trail across the stream and willows from camp though. Just saying. This first camp had nice views of the valley, a fire ring, bear pole and a potty nearby. It also had a fair amount of pesky mosquitoes mid July. As it was getting dark I noticed a bull moose looking up at me from the willows, not far from where I had previously trekked down for water. The second camp site up Fan Creek is more open and breezy. It had shade though, and a potty up a short trail along with the bear pole. It is just a short walk off the trail. I didn’t stay there, but just stopped for lunch. Continued up trail towards High Lake. Not far from my lunch stop I got chewed out by a pair of Red Tailed hawks who must have felt I was too close to their nest. Saw wolf tracks on the trail up to High Lake. Occasional bear scat, probably black bear. I was disappointed in the High Lake campsite although the lake was pretty. No fires are allowed here and they have removed all stones and logs one might consider sitting on. Just bare dirt with a bear pole and enough trees for shade. I was pretty tired and sore after getting there and could have really used something other than a low rock to rest my rear end on. Btw, there are fish in High Lake, unlike Crescent Lake. There were also multitudes of mosquitoes. They stayed up late, as it didn’t get too cold that night and were up early. I broke camp early and got back on the trail before it warmed up too much. The hike from High Lake to Crescent Lake takes you up to a ridge where you have several opportunities for amazing views. In some spots it is very steep, and in other places the usually well marked trail fades away and ya have to sort of figure which way to go with gps or map. Saw bits of mountain goat hair caught in the brush along the ridge. Stopped at Crescent Lake for lunch. It is a nice camp but day hiking opportunities there entail working your way through and around a thick forest of many downed trees and brush. There is a bear pole there and easy water from the lake outlet. The only suitable tent spot I could find there on a previous trip was on the other side of the trail in a small not entirely level open area between the trees. The other choices all seemed too close to cooking area or the bear pole. The trip down from Crescent to the Specimen Creek trailhead was uneventful. Beautiful views and less mosquitoes. I did this 30 mile loop camping only two nights. I didn’t get in a hurry but it was pretty brutal on me carrying a relatively heavy backpack and hiking so many hours each day. Would definitely recommend at least another night on the loop and then perhaps a side stay up at Shelf Lake but keep in mind that trail has a lot of elevation gain in only 2 miles. I dropped my vehicle off at Specimen TH then hitchhiked to the Fawn Pass trailhead.
